Tips on how to create the best events for intimate gatherings as well as larger-scale functions

Canada Bay Club in Sydney’s Five Dock has been a meeting place for its local community for more than 50 years. Its modern function rooms rival the best venues in the Inner West. Here, our experienced team gives you tips on how to create the best events for intimate gatherings as well as larger-scale functions.

How do I choose the best space for my function? Choose a space that fits the guests snugly. There’s nothing worse than booking a room for 12 people that comfortably fits 50; conversely, avoid trying to fit 50 people in a room that normally fits 20. Canada Bay Club in Sydney’s Five Dock has three beautiful function rooms catering for small groups and larger parties up to 300. Each has cutting-edge audio-visual equipment, a private bar and hot drink counter.

How do I create the best styling for the space? Always aim to create an inviting space for guests. Ambient lighting is a good place to start – candles work beautifully and are affordable. Also, don’t be afraid to use your best china and silverware – it will make your event feel special. Flowers make great table arrangements. Keep the arrangement low so guests can see each other over the top.

How do I decide what’s on the menu? Relaxed menu choices with fresh, good-quality ingredients are easy to prepare and crowd pleasers. A three-course menu, using tried-and-tested recipes that can be pre-prepared, will also work well. Keep your dessert light – a vibrant fruit platter with seasonal fruits served with yogurt or ice cream is quick and delicious. Also, remember to over-cater – there’s nothing worse than running out of food!

If you’re planning an event at a function centre, Canada Bay Club offers packages to make your job easier. Or if you have something specific in mind, the catering department can tailor a menu. Our modern Chinese restaurant Baysia is also an option, if your heart’s set on one of its signature dishes, like steamed prawn dumplings.

How do I choose drinks to suit everyone’s taste? Ask for people’s preferences and also keep a bottle of Champagne on hand and a bottle of something non-alcoholic for non-drinkers. If you’re unsure, focus on pairing your beverages with the food you’re serving.

So next time you need to source a venue for an upcoming strategy day, your cousin gets engaged and hasn’t a clue where to fit 250 guests or your neighbour wants somewhere to host her baby’s christening, you know who to call – Canada Bay Club.
