Singapore’s Changi Airport expands runway capacity

Singapore’s Changi Airport has resumed work on its long-awaited Terminal 5 and new commercial runway, part of the multi-billion-dollar Changi East project. The development will add capacity for up to 50 million extra passengers annually and ensure the airport remains a leading Asia-Pacific hub.

The new runway, converted from a former military airstrip, will operate alongside Changi’s existing two runways. It’s being reinforced to handle wide-body aircraft and integrated with advanced air-traffic control systems to support simultaneous take-offs and landings while cutting taxi times.

Sustainability is central to the design, with low-emission ground operations, energy-efficient lighting and smart taxiway management.

Terminal 5 will feature AI-driven passenger flow, robotics and fully automated baggage handling.

Construction will be completed in stages through the late 2020s, with early operations targeted before 2030. The project positions Singapore to meet future aviation growth whil maintaining its reputation for precision, efficiency and traveller experience
