Book review: Make Work Work For You, by Louise Gilbert

Leading EAs? Make Work Work for You offers practical tools to build a stronger, more efficient admin team

“This book is a guide to 27 Leadership practices to achieve excellence across performance, growth, and well-being. Each chapter defines and describes the practice and then provides practical tips to “make it work”, says Amy Moore, EA in the financial services industry. Gilbert has also included guides to DIY a number of activities throughout the book to assist individuals, teams, and organisations in achieving their objectives.

There were many sections I bookmarked that will be helpful in my individual and leadership development, including some great reminders that will be useful regardless of the readers’ role – “Growth happens in the doing” being at the top of this list. Whilst not written exclusively for an EA/PA audience, many of the Individual and team practices will be useful to the admin community. Gilbert’s chapter on ‘Building Mindset’ and her guide to active reflection are a game changer that will help elevate EAs from being a resource to being talent in their organisation.

If you are in a Leadership role overseeing EAs, Make Work Work for You is a great resource offering a variety of practical exercises that you can implement to help create a well-oiled administrative team. Gilbert’s top ten tips to build good relationships are a useful guide that can not only set a people leader up for success but can also act as a regular pulse check after initial implementation.

I initially thought that I wouldn’t recommend reading the entire Make Work Work for You to every EA out there, given Gilbert delves into Organisation Practices in Part 3. On further reflection, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Even if you are not EA to the CEO of your organisation, the entire book, cover to cover, will help you see the bigger picture and set you and your executive up for ongoing success.

…and any Professional Development book that quotes The Office is a winner in my books!”
