In a culture obsessed with doing more, most of us are running on less. Less energy. Less clarity. Less connection. But what if burnout isn’t the price of success, what if it’s the signal for change? Tim Jack Adams, founder of leading wellbeing consultancy GreenX7, is on a mission to recharge Australia by asking one question: How’s Your Battery? For Executive PA Media, EA Joy Namdarian reviewed his new book ‘Energised’.
Adam’s new book explores how to calibrate our lives to avoid running on empty. The book presents an easy-to-follow framework encapsulating eight core areas of wellness – purpose, sleep, physical health, nutrition, mindset, fun, relationships and friendships.
It offers practical ideas on how we, as EAs, can better manage the well-being of our teams without burning ourselves out.
In the chapter on ‘Fun’, Tim, a wellness guru, suggests having a fun bag ready to go, making brainstorming sessions playful, encouraging team challenges and friendly competitions, and allowing time for unstructured play and creative thinking. These are things we can easily incorporate into our day and provide to the leadership team as prompts to keep things at work light and playful.
At the end of each chapter, the ‘Taking Action’ section provides a neat summary, shares tips on how to take action, followed by thought-provoking questions, and then guidance on how to make it happen.
He reminds us about the importance of maintaining balance because our actions can have a domino effect, whether positive or negative, to our well-being e.g. stress at work can lead to eating poorly which can lead to health issues and so forth.
I found the wellness wheel quite helpful in providing a dashboard view of my overall battery health. It’s such a simple diagram, but rather effective in giving me a quick view of my well-being, allowing me to identify areas I should put more energy into.
There’s so much content out there on well-being, and a lot of it would be familiar to us. However, for EAs who want to stay sharp, energised, and effective – without burning out – Energised is a practical guide that is worth a read.
